For those of you who want to root your Galaxy Note Edge, here’s how to root your Note Edge using the CWM/TWRP recovery method. We will first install a custom recovery CWM or TWRP, then simply flash the latest SuperSU zip file by ChainFire to obtain root.
This is probably the preferred method of rooting as it will also give you the ability to backup, restore, and install ROMs. So, let’s do this.
First, this root method currently supports the following Note Edge models:
- T-Mobile Note Edge SM-N915T
- Sprint Note Edge SM-N915P
- Korean SK Telecom Note Edge SM-N910S
- International Note Edge SM-N915F, SM-N915G, SM-N9150
Step 1. Power off your Note Edge. Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons for about 3 seconds until you see a warning screen like below: (mine is in Korean but yours may be in English)
Then hit Volume Up key to enter ODIN Download Mode and connect a micro-USB cable from your Note Edge to your computer.
Step 2. Go to our CWM/TWRP Recovery page and download a compatible CWM or TWRP recovery for your model.
You will also need to download ODIN program if you don’t have it yet.
Once the files are downloaded, unzip the ODIN program and you should get a folder with the ODIN program and a file ending in “.tar” for your custom recovery.
Step 3. Run the ODIN program. Make sure you see a yellow-highlighted box like below. If you don’t, you don’t have Note Edge drivers installed. Download and run the Note Edge drivers.
Once you see the yellow-highlighted box, choose PDA then choose the recovery tar file you downloaded earlier for your Note Edge model.
Step 4. Hit Start, and this should install CWM or TWRP recovery on your Note Edge. You will see “PASS!” if it’s successful and should only take 5 seconds. If you get failed message or it hangs, try using a different USB cable/port first. Also do not use a USB hub as they interfere with ODIN.
Step 5. Your phone should have rebooted. Download SuperSU zip file below then copy over to anywhere on your phone’s storage.
Step 6. Next, power off your Note Edge then hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons for about 10 seconds.
You should see CWM recovery or TWRP recovery page like below. If you don’t see this, your phone may have a “recovery overwrite” feature. You can use the battery pull method, please see the video tutorial as I show you how to solve this issue.
Step 7. Choose “Install Zip” then “choose zip from /sdcard” or “choose zip from /storage/extSdcard” depending on where you copied the SuperSU zip file to earlier.
Browse your storage and select the SuperSU zip file.
Install the file and this should take 5 seconds.
Step 8. Once rebooted, you will find SuperSU app, select it to run it.
SuperSU will ask you to disable KNOX, say “OK”. If this hangs for some reason, simply reboot your phone and try again, it will usually work the second time.
SuperSU may also asks you if you want to update the SU binary, choose “Continue” then “Normal”. If this hangs, reboot and try again.
Step 9. Once you get no messages from SuperSU, congratulations you have fully rooted your Galaxy Note Edge! You can verify you have full root by installing and running any rooted app like Titanium Backup app. You should see a nice Superuser request window pop up. Congrats!
Q: Can I still get OTA updates after using this root method?
A: You will not be able to get OTA updates once you have rooted using this method as it will replace your stock recovery, which is required to get OTA updates. However, you can grab rooted OTA stock ROMs to get OTA and keep root in the future.
Q: How can I thank you for your tutorial?
A: I don’t take donations but if you could PLEASE subscribe to my Zedomax YouTube channel, that would help me greatly and thank you!
